VFD Cable Buyers in Pennsylvania
Shielded drive cable from Pennsylvania plants and integrators, bought on shield integrity and remaining footage.
VFD cable is built for the output side of a variable frequency drive, where a pulse width modulated waveform creates problems that ordinary power cable was never designed to handle. The construction uses three symmetrical grounding conductors, a copper tape or braid shield and insulation with controlled capacitance, so reflected wave voltage, common mode current and electrical noise stay within limits the motor can tolerate. Drive manufacturers publish cable requirements, and this product exists to meet them.
Because it is specified by drive engineers rather than installed by the mile, VFD cable often arrives in modest reels of 250 to 1000 ft and leaves a balance when a machine is relocated. Pennsylvania plants, integrators and mechanical contractors hold these leftovers. The material is worth reviewing as cable rather than as copper, since a shielded reel with known footage serves the next drive installation directly. A sealed reel with a readable tag is straightforward. A coil pulled from a drive that failed is not.
| Construction | Three phase conductors with three symmetrical ground conductors, copper tape or braid shield and an overall jacket |
|---|---|
| Conductors | Stranded copper, commonly 16 AWG through 500 kcmil, often with finer stranding for flexibility |
| Insulation | XLPE or PVC/nylon with low capacitance; shield coverage typically 100 percent with a drain wire |
| Voltage and temperature | 600 V or 1 kV, rated 90 C; many constructions carry a TC-ER listing |
| Standards | UL 1277 tray cable listing, UL 1685 vertical tray flame test, and drive manufacturer cable specifications |
What VFD cable is
A drive output cable differs from ordinary feeder cable in three ways. The grounds are symmetrical, meaning three conductors spaced evenly around the phase conductors rather than one ground in a filler, which keeps the impedance balanced and reduces shaft voltage and bearing current. The shield, usually copper tape or a bronze braid, contains the high frequency noise the drive generates. The insulation is chosen for low capacitance so long motor leads do not amplify voltage reflections.
That combination is why a drive cable cannot be swapped for shielded power cable or tray cable in a specification. Shielded medium voltage cable also has a shield, but it is a stress control layer for 5 kV and above, not a noise barrier for a 480 V drive output.
- Three symmetrical grounds rather than one
- Overall shield with drain wire for noise containment
- Low capacitance insulation for long motor leads
- Flexible stranding for tight panel and motor connections
Where Pennsylvania sellers use VFD cable
Anything that varies speed uses a drive: pumps in water treatment, fans in a plant air handler, conveyors in food processing, extruders and mixers in plastics, and the machine tools in a job shop. Each drive needs a cable from the panel to the motor, and each retrofit adds another. Integrators who build control panels buy reels and keep the balance for the next job.
Mechanical and electrical contractors working in hospitals and data centers also carry VFD cable for chilled water pumps and cooling tower fans. When a drive is relocated or a motor replaced with a different frame, the original cable is often too short and a new length is ordered, leaving the old reel in the shop.
What makes VFD cable resellable
Shield integrity is the first question. A cable that was dragged over a sharp edge can have a torn tape shield under an intact jacket, and that damage is invisible until the cable is tested. Reels that were pulled normally and stored on the flange are the easiest to place. Cut ends should show the shield, the drain wire and the symmetrical grounds clearly.
Sizes in the 8 AWG to 2 AWG range move fastest because they match common 5 to 50 hp motors. Very small drive cable in 16 and 14 AWG is bought by panel shops. Large 250 to 500 kcmil drive cable is a specialty item, priced on copper content with a premium when the listing and shield are documented.
- Intact shield with visible drain wire at the cut
- Sealed reels from panel shops and integrators
- 8 AWG through 2 AWG for common motor sizes
- Printed legend showing TC-ER and 1 kV rating
Condition, storage and identification
VFD cable is more fragile than it looks. The tape shield wrinkles if the reel is dropped, and a kinked cable can have a displaced shield even when the jacket looks fine. Storage indoors on the reel flange is ideal. Reels left in a yard for a summer will show jacket chalking, and UV exposure over several years can harden the outer jacket enough to crack when the cable is unrolled.
Identification depends on the print and the tag. Drive cable usually carries the manufacturer, the size, the voltage and the TC-ER designation, and many constructions print the shield type. Where the tag is missing, the presence of three bare or green grounds plus a foil or braid shield is enough to identify the product family.
What to send for a quote
Send a photo of the reel tag, the jacket print and the cut end. The cut end matters more here than on most products because it shows the shield, the drain wire and the ground arrangement. Tell us the footage and whether the reel has been pulled since it was delivered.
We review the lot and return a quote, then arrange pickup. VFD reels are usually light enough for a lift gate, but give us the reel size and weight so the truck matches the load, and note whether the material is indoors or in a yard.
- Tag and print still readable on the reel
- Cut end showing shield, drain wire and grounds
- Size, footage and number of reels
- Whether the cable has been installed and removed
- Storage location and reel weight

VFD Cable questions
How do I know if cable is VFD cable and not tray cable?
Look at the cut end. VFD cable has three symmetrical grounds around the phases plus a foil or braid shield with a drain wire. Tray cable normally has one ground in a filler and no overall shield.
Do you buy VFD cable that has been in service?
Yes, if it was removed without jacket damage. We ask how it was pulled and look for shield damage at the ends. Cable with a crushed or torn shield is quoted as recovery value, because the noise containment cannot be verified.
Why is VFD cable worth more than ordinary copper cable?
Because few plants keep it in stock and a replacement reel is expensive. When the shield, grounds and print are intact, it has real resale value to integrators and maintenance departments facing a drive replacement on short notice.
Can you take short lengths of drive cable?
Short lengths are common in this product and are reviewed individually. A 40 ft piece can suit a small motor connection, so we ask for the exact length rather than assuming it is scrap. Odd lengths are quoted on their own.
